In the Beginning: In September, 1942, approximately 61 members known as the General Forrest Chapter, became one of the original chapters of the National Secretaries Association (NSA). Major changes occurred in 1946 when the Memphis Chapter withdrew from NSA and was chartered in Secretaries International (SI). The chapter had 48 members at that time; their purpose was "to promote matters of interest to members of the secretarial profession along social, professional, educational and intellectual lines." The last convention of Secretaries International was held in 1950, at which time they voted to rejoin NSA. On February 12, 1981, National Secretaries Association became Professional Secretaries International (PSI).
Reflecting the broader range of job titles and expanded responsibilities held by today's administrative support staff, a vast majority of PSI member delegates voted to change their association's name to the International Association of Administrative Professionals® (IAAP®) in August, 1998.
